the theory of the five monkeys

the theory of the five monkeys

Scientists brought five monkeys and put them in a cage. They then hung a bunch of bananas in the middle of the cage and placed a ladder under the bananas. A short time later, they noticed one of the monkeys, which they named “Monkey A,” trying to reach the bananas by climbing the ladder. But they sprayed cold water on the other four monkeys below to scare them away. After a while, another monkey, whom they called Monkey B, tried to climb the ladder to reach the bananas, and they asked us to repeat the same process by spraying cold water on the remaining four monkeys at the bottom. We repeated this process several times. After a while, we noticed that as soon as any monkey tried to climb the ladder to reach the bananas, he was prevented by the group because he was afraid of the pain of the cold water.

Now, I will run out the cold water and take one of the five monkeys out of the cage, and put a new monkey in its place, which is the first monkey. This monkey was not exposed to the cold water incident, nor did he see anything happening inside the cage. The first monkey will go to the stairs to pick bananas, and the other monkeys will attack him to stop him. The first monkey will learn that when he tries to pick bananas, he will be subjected to harsh punishment from society.

Then he took out another monkey other than the first monkey, and inserted a new monkey in its place, which was the second monkey. The same scene will be repeated, where the second monkey goes bananas in innocence and naivety and gets beaten by the other monkeys. Thus the process is repeated with each new monkey until the old group is replaced by the new generation of monkeys.

In the end, you will find that the monkeys will continue to punish anyone who tries to approach the banana, without any of them knowing the real reason behind this.
